Website content
does more than the obvious, and in fact serves two distinctly different
purposes. It not only describes your company and it's products
and services, but it provides a critical element to achieving top
search engine ranking.
Google, Yahoo, MSN and other search engines weigh content very
heavily when developing the rankings of websites. So does this mean
that the more content the better? Not necessarily. Although it is
advantageous to have a large amount of content, it is the appropriateness
of the content and inclusion of targeted keywords that provide websites
with real results.

How to Develop Effective
Website Content
To facilitate top search engine rankings, one must
integrate the same phrases that are being used to search for
your products and services within your website pages.
For example, webstart.ca's homepage integrates the phrase
"search engine optimization" and content has been
developed around it because this phrase is being used by people
on search engines to find out about this service. Although
"making a website search engine friendly" may describe
the same service, it is not a phrase that is used to find
this service and is therefore far less effective at generating
traffic to our website.
After determining what phrases are being searched for that
describe your product or service and generating a list of
keywords you are going to target, next comes integrating these
keywords into your current website content and further developing
the written copy. Generally speaking, the more appropriate
content, that is the more content directly related to the
keyword, the better. In search engine terms, a content rich
site is a significant site and is likely to rank higher than
those containing less content. The idea is not to
repeat the chosen phrases as many times as possible within
the written content, but rather to achieve a target density
(often called a keyword density).
Because almost every website has more than one page, businesses
can target more than one or two keywords. Commonly,
individual pages of a website will target individual keywords.
For example, some pages on webstart.ca target "search
engine optimization" while others target "web design"
or "web hosting".
